This sculpture shows Grant in early May 1864 when he fought Robert E Lee for the first time. Grant viewed this battle as the beginning of the end for Lee’s army. After inconclusive fighting in the Wilderness on May 4th/5th Grant disdained withdrawal and resumed the southward advance. The army of the Potomac would not retreat again.
